How many pairs of shoes do you own? If you are the typical American, then very likely you have at least five to ten pairs of shoes in your closet. However, it is not uncommon for some people, especially women, to own a hundred pairs of shoes or more, representing a significant investment of thousands of dollars. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just go barefoot? Why do people love shoes so much, even wearing them to the grave?
Well, according to footwear historian Dr. Rossi, the purpose of shoes is in this order: sex attraction, status symbol, and least of all utilitarian purpose, such as protection from harsh weather. (4) He says studies estimate that at least 80% to 90% of all footwear sold, falls into the first two categories. After all, hardly anybody takes off their shoes during warm weather. Likewise, so-called "sensible" shoes have always accounted for a tiny fraction of footwear sales, indicating that consumers have consistently rejected more comfortable footwear in favor of more fashionable footwear.

Dr. Rossi indicates that the word "shoe" itself evolved from the old Anglo-Saxon "sceo", which means "to cover", and that the original use was not in a protective sense but in a sexual sense. The stature of a woman is boosted both literally and figuratively when she is wearing high heels, attracting attention of other women and particularly that of the men. Standing in bare feet permits bones and body structures to balance effortlessly over one another (shown left in A). Adding a heel underneath each ankle joint would force a rigid body column to pitch or tilt forward in accommodation (shown center in B), but gravity does not allow such an arrangement, and so the body spontaneously adjusts the posture to keep from falling over (shown right in C).
Aside from the provocative sex symbolism inherent to high heels, such physical adjustment to the body gives a more shapely contour to the ankle and leg, with a sexier, leggier look, providing an emotional uplift that itself enhances sexual attraction. Widely admired by both men and women alike, these very same changes seem to be detrimental to health as internal structures, such as organs, glands, tissues, muscles, bones, and joints, must readjust their natural position to accommodate shoes. For example, the cause of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) remains unknown, but seems to afflict women in the United States more often than men. Could their higher heels have anything to do with it? The jaw is fundamentally a mechanical structure whose alignment depends vitally upon the alignment of the feet. Try tilting your head forward or backward, left or right, in various directions and chewing. Do you feel one set of muscles working harder or differently than another? Does it feel effortless or strained? Could you chew in that manner for a week, a month, a year, a decade, or a lifetime?

When the balanced body column is habitually thrust forward—even over a so-called "sensible" or "low" one-inch heel, like that found in many athletic sneakers or men's boots—then the jaw is constantly forced to perform against gravity in an unnatural way, leading to shortened muscles, strained ligaments, and inflexible joints that are susceptible to any additional trauma or stressful demand, no matter how minor it may seem. Furthermore, weakness in one foot or ankle joint, induced by putting differently shaped feet in the same-sized shoes, may tilt the body to the side as well, subsequently leading to problems in the left-right direction too. Popping, clicking, grinding, and clenching are common outcomes to the unbalanced muscle tension that seems to result from wearing shoes, not to mention headaches and tinnitus (ear ringing) that are certain to arise under chronic misalignment of the jaw.

If the entire jaw is thus susceptible to the habitual use of shoes, then are its internal structures such as the teeth and gums also at risk of disease and disorder? Do problems such as crooked or cramped teeth, temperature-sensitive teeth, gum disease, gum recession, root canals, tooth decay, dental caries, and cavities tend to plague those who wear shoes more than primitive people who go barefoot? If shoes cause popping, snapping, clicking, or cracking in the jaw joints, then what other joints or internal structures of the body are also susceptible to shoes? Because the jaw is a mechanical structure, do the statistical correlations between periodontal disease and heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and respiratory problems indicate that these conditions are also mechanical rather than dietary? Could all of these disorders share a common denominator? What degenerative diseases affect women disproportionately more than men? Many other provocative questions will be asked, and perhaps answered, as we chew over some further topics and examples.

Contrary to popular belief that high heels are a health killer, some people may actually need to wear them for health reasons.

So says Dr Norbert Poessel, a certified physiotherapist and naturopath who has eight years of experience in treating feet problems and posture-related ailments.



According to him, women with high-arched feet actually need to wear heels that are at least three to four centimetres high, in order to have good posture.

"Unlike those with flat feet, people with high-arched feet experience more tension under the foot between the front of the foot and the heel," said Dr Poessel.

"When people with high, arched feet wear flat shoes, they tend to experience discomfort or get problems like lower backache," he said. "But when they wear higher heels, they will actually feel comfortable in them and have no lower back pain."

However, he took pains to point out that he wasn't talking about the kitten heels and skyscraper stilettos found in shoe stores.

In fact, Dr Poessel cautions against those types of footwear as they cause calf muscles to cramp easily. The high-heeled shoes he prescribes are broader, with a wide wedge for greater stability.

While this may come as good news for those with high-arched feet, don't take out the pom-poms just yet.

Ms Chelsea Law, a podiatrist from Alexandra Hospital's Rehabilitation Department, says that, while wearing high heels can indeed relieve some stress on a tight Achilles tendon (a complication caused by a high arch), they should never exceed one inch (about two centimetres).

According to Ms Law, high-heeled shoes lack good cushioning at the heel pad, which those with high arched feet need. It may even aggravate the problem of ankle instability, which such individuals commonly face. In turn, this could make them prone to ankle sprains.

One thing that Ms Law and Dr Poessel agree on is that custom-made insoles can help address any misalignment of the bone or soft tissue structures in the lower leg.

"Insoles enable the wearer to walk with a more optimal gait and thus, reduces the chances of developing injuries or pain in the future," said Ms Law.

She also suggested wearing shoes with superior cushioning, especially at the heel pad and the ball of foot area. - TODAY /yh

Kleider machen Leute. Das gleiche gilt auch für Schuhe. Das enthüllte die Kultserie "Sex and the City". Die echten Manolo Blahniks lassen nicht nur die Trägerin einige Zentimeter höher durchs Leben schweben, sondern sie fühlt sich auch sexy. Kein Wunder, dass Frau auf den richtigen Schmuck für ihre Füße steht. Das äußert sich in ungezügelten Shoppingtouren durch Schuhläden.

Den Schuh-Tick der Frau belegt nun auch eine Umfrage für die Frauenzeitschrift Laura. Nahezu jede zweite Frau besitzt mehr als 25 Paar Schuhe. 38 Prozent der Frauen besitzen zwischen 10 bis 15 Paar Schuhe.

Die Oberländer Unternehmerin Gretl Patscheider gibt zu: "Ich bin ein Schuh-Freak." Etwa 30 Paare nennt sie ihr Eigen. "Ein Teil davon ist bis zu 20 Jahre alt. Patscheider ist ein Fan von High-Heels. "Sie machen einen erotischen Fuß. In flacheren Schuhen fühle ich mich so, als hätte ich Rückenlage." Daher dürfe ein hochhackiger Schuh schon mal bis zu 150 Euro kosten.

Man hält es kaum für möglich, aber Patscheider gehört zu Frauen, die wenig Schuhe besitzen. Es gibt Tirolerinnen, die zwischen 120 und 150 Paare horten. Das schildert die Innsbrucker Schuhdesignerin Christine Piberhofer. "Diese Frauen sind nicht verrückt. Sondern sie haben den passenden Schuh zur Kleidung. Und sind so bestens angezogen", nimmt sie möglichen männlichen Attacken den Wind aus den Segeln.

Die Schuh-Expertin nennt selbst nicht einmal 25 Paar ihr Eigen. "Ich kann aber bei mir im Laden immer zugreifen."

Einem Teil der Männer stellt Piberhofer ein schlechtes Geschmackszeugnis bei Schuhen aus. "Es gibt welche, die haben nur zwei Paar und fahren gleichzeitig ein dickes Auto." Schämt Euch, ihr Männer! "Schuhe sind so etwas wie eine Visitenkarte. Sie sagen etwas über das Niveau aus", glaubt die Schuhmacherin.

"Es ist bekannt, dass Frauen einen Schuh-Tick haben", möchte Landesrätin Elisabeth Zanon nichts beschönigen. Sie seien schnell gekauft, bei diesen vielen Modellen und Farben. "Da kann man einfach nicht wiederstehen." Wieviel Schuhe sie besitzt, weiß sie nicht. "Ich habe sie noch nie gezählt."

Zanon hat Lieblingsschuhe. Einmal weigerte sich ihr Schuster ihre Lieblingstreter wieder herauszugeben. "Die Schuhe sind ausgelatscht, Frau Landesrätin."

Etwa 25 Paar besitzt Maria Zelger vom gleichnamigen Innsbrucker Modehaus. Sie liebt Extreme. Entweder muss der Schmuck für ihre Füße flippig oder klassisch sein. High-Heels trägt sie nicht. "Ich bin ziemlich groß."

"Kleidung kann durch unpassende Schuhe kaputt gemacht werden", schildert die Schwazer Unternehmerin Barbara Zitterbart. Über 50 Paar füllen ihren Schuhschrank. Doch Schuh-Tick hätten Frauen keinen. "Der modebewusste Mann hat sicher auch mehr als 25 Paar."

Warum gibt's dann keine Studie über volle Schuhschränke von Männern? Wir scheinen doch noch etwas Nachholbedarf beim Schuh-Tick zu haben.

Deren Ergebnis hätten die Redakteurinnen auch kostenlos bei einer Latte-Macchiato-Runde von Freundinnen erfahren können - oder wenn sie auch nur zwei Männer gefragt hätten. Nach der Umfrage besitzt nahezu jede zweite Frau (45 Prozent) mehr als 25 Paar Schuhe. Ach was! Hätten wir ja nie für möglich gehalten!


Wie wäre es wohl sonst zu erklären, daß jedes zweite Geschäft in der Fußgängerzone ein Schuhgeschäft ist? Frustkauf ist Schuhkauf. Denn Schuhe passen immer. Keine Twiggy-Verkäuferin kommentiert die Anprobe mit „Das Teil haben wir leider nur in S”. Und selbst wenn es das begehrte Paar nur noch eine Nummer kleiner gibt, hat man viele Argumente: Die laufen sich ein! Die lassen sich mit Schuhspannern dehnen! Die sind vorne/hinten sowieso offen! Das Leder weitet sich! Die ziehe ich, sobald ich im Theater sitze, eben gleich wieder aus!

Was zählt überhaupt als Schuh?

Die Diskussion wirft aber grundsätzliche Fragen auf, die bei der Diskussion um den Platz im heimischen Schuhschrank durchaus relevant sind: Was zählt bei der offiziellen Bestandsaufnahme überhaupt als Schuh? Welche Fußbekleidung muß frau nicht in die hochhackige Bilanz einrechnen? Gummistiefel, Wanderstiefel, Skischuhe, Badelatschen? Beispiel Flip-Flops: Die kosten doch fast nichts und hat man im Idealfall dutzendweise in verschiedensten Farbnuancen.

Und was ist mit Schuhen, die man nur einmal im Jahr trägt, weil sie nur zu einem Kleid passen? Oder denen, die man längst entsorgen wollte, die aber einfach zu teuer waren oder zu wenig getragen sind oder beides? Dann die Erinnerungsstücke: an den Italien-Urlaub vor zehn Jahren, den ersten Tag im ersten Job, das Date mit David, die Hochzeit mit Hans. Alte Liebesbriefe entsorgt man schließlich auch nicht im Altpapiercontainer.

Außerdem: Je mehr Schuhe man hat, desto öfter wechselt man, desto länger halten die übrigen. Rauswachsen tut man ja zum Glück nicht (außer man wird schwanger oder kommt in die Wechseljahre), und vielleicht kommt's ja wieder in Mode - haben wir alles schon erlebt. Also im Zweifel aufbewahren - am besten staubfrei in Schuhkartons mit Polaroid vornedrauf.

All das abgezogen, haben die Frauen fast gar keine richtigen Schuhe! Und überhaupt: Sollen doch die Männer ihre paar Paar Tennisschuhe, Joggingschuhe, Stollenschuhe, Sneakers sprich Vernunftsschuhe einfach mal zur Seite rücken! Für eine 25-Paar-Durchschnitts-Partnerin können sie echt dankbar sein. Schließlich sind alle deutschen Schuhsüchtigen nichts im Vergleich zu Mariah Carey: Die Sängerin besitzt gut 10.000 Paar - Flip-Flops garantiert nicht mitgezählt!
